Storytelling: A Reflection of Ourselves Whatââ¬â¢s the first thing that pops into your head when you think of storytelling? Is it the countless nights you laid in bed as a child listening intently to stories that made you believe you could be and do anything; you could be a pirate day and an astronaut tomorrow or even a detective outsmarting the bad guys like Sherlock Holmes and Watson or Nancy Drew. Or perhaps you think of that lecture in your high school or college history class when your professor showed you a documentary or a movie that introduced you to a part of the world, group of people, or a movement like The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 or Rob Marshallââ¬â¢s adaptation of Arthur Goldenââ¬â¢s Memoirs of a Geisha that left you with a hungerâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I grew up as a Pastorââ¬â¢s grandchild, a wholly different experience than my momââ¬â¢s complicated experience as the ââ¬Å"Preacherââ¬â¢s kidâ⬠. As a pastor my grandmother has what I always thought was an unwavering belief system in which God is everything, school wouldnââ¬â¢t get you to heaven, men were meant to sow their wild oats, and women were meant to diligently wait for their return. These were the lessons, the stories she impressed upon her children and left whispers upon the grandkids. However, I saw a remarkable change in my grandmother as she retold the sparse narratives of our family history to my sister and me. What I saw in my grandmother was self-reflection, reflection of the seemly unending cycle of uneducated women with babies to feed, no men insight, and grandsons toddling behind. African American History During my early years of school, I remember being taught white accomplishments and wondering if blacks and other people of color had made any significant contributions to todays world. I noticed that television consist of all white people. Throughout my research paper I hope to cover certain aspects of African American heritage. Aspects such as blacks making up the largest minority group in the United States, although Mexican-Americans are rapidly changing that.
